Family adventure holidays to make you smile

School, work and the daily grind can be exhausting for the whole family. To combat stress, the NHS recommends making time for hobbies, exercising regularly, and sharing your worries with friends or family. It also suggests taking a holiday. Family adventure holidays can be a good way to combine all these remedies: spending time with the family, to help bring on a happy and healthy mindset. If you are bored of the ‘normal’ family holiday and want some excitement, here are some tips and inspiration to help you dream up a family holiday that’s outside the box.

Fly to Costa Rica for an adventure

Costa Rica has five active volcanoes.

In Spanish, Costa Rica means “rich coast”. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, it’s a place that will appeal to adventure-seekers of all kinds. Divers flock to the Gulf of Papagayo because of its accessibility (it’s close to Liberia International Airport). Deep-sea diving is also popular in the waters close to Corcovado National Park, and Caño Island. A more boisterous adventure awaits in Rio Pacuare, a white-water play area for extreme rafting. Or you might want to surf the waves in the beaches of Tamarindo, Samara, Avellanas and Nosara.

Explore the wild side of the country through zip lining or just an exploratory hike in national parks and protected areas, which cover 10% of the country. The biodiverse Corcovado and Los Quetzales National Parks, where you’ll see scarlet macaws, and howler monkeys, are top of the list. The country is also famed for its towering volcanoes. Arenal volcano is just one of the five Costa Rican active volcanoes. Judging by the range of exciting activities on offer, there’s no doubt that Costa Rica is the perfect adventure holiday destination

Go sailing

Families who want a sailing adventure have a wealth of destinations to choose from.

If you want to experience the wind on your face, and the sun’s glow on the salty sea, then plan to go sailing in the world’s best seas. Some of the best experiences can be found in sailing havens like Thailand, Greece, Croatia, The Grenadines, Montenegro, Zanzibar, The British Virgin Islands, and New Zealand. There are many more!

Go island hopping in Thailand

The incredible culture and landscape in Thailand is sure to leave you in awe. Thailand is home to over 300 striking islands. Phuket, Koh Lipe, Krabi, and Koh Phi Phi are the main island-hopping centers. You can also start the trip in a popular place called Andaman Sea.

Thailand isn’t the only place for island hopping. Pre kids, I spent a blissful summer island hopping in Greece, which you can read about here.

Go glamping

Glamping can be a fun way to experience the outdoors without compromising on luxury.

Glamping has become a trendy, luxury alternative to camping. There is all manner of exciting places to stay, from treehouses, shepherd’s huts, bell tents, yurts or even converted buses. Glamping campsites are dotted all over the UK and Europe, and glamping makes for the perfect holiday for nature lovers who want to maintain some luxury but still be out in the great outdoors. Depending on your own needs and desires, there is an array of locations, prices and standards available to pick from.

We’ve tried glamping a few times. You can read about our family adventure holidays in shepherd’s huts in Sussex, England or the Gower, Wales. We even once stayed in a Knight’s tent in the grounds of a medieval castle!
