If you happen to be traipsing through old London Taaaahn on Wednesday 5 February, keep an eye out for those well-known London landmarks.
The top hat. The Scottie dog. The iron. The vintage hat. And the old boot.
A gang of over 25 bloggers will be marching across the capital, as part of #Teamhonkrelay’s nation-wide bid to raise over £25,000 for Sport Relief. We’ll all be wearing silly outfits (yes, I and the Pigeon Pair – Austin (4) and Gwen (1) – will be joining in the afternoon leg). And the London route will take in the key sites of the Monopoly Board.
Surely, paying homage to a board game that’s given thousands (if not millions) of families a fundamental understanding of the basics of capitalism, is a positive step towards raising the moolah that’s needed?
And instead of lots of itty-bitty sharp-cornered houses and hotels, this is what your money could buy if you donate to Sport Relief:
• £1 could provide a hot meal for a child in the UK living in extreme poverty.
• £5 could pay for a mosquito net to protect a mother and her baby in Africa from contracting malaria while they sleep.
• £10 could enable an older person in the UK who just lost someone they love to attend a group activity.
• £25 could run a sports session for disabled children in the UK, giving them the chance to play with other young people.
• £100 could feed 200 children living on the streets in India for one day.
• £300 could provide a water point in the slums of Tanzania, giving hundreds of families access to safe, clean water.
• £500 could provide six months of support for a young person in the UK with mental health issues.
Team Honk was dreamt up back in 2012 as a social media fundraiser for Comic Relief. Parent blogging geniuses (genii?) Annie, Tanya and Penny were invited to go to Ghana to help live blog and tweet the charity’s 25th birthday celebrations. Their achievement in bringing together the parent blogging community over this cause was phenomenal, and you can read more about it here.
Honkathon is part of this year’s Team Honk efforts: a relay, which started in Lands End on 12 January and will finish in John O’ Groats on 23 March. Over 200 bloggers, their friends and families are following a route that zig zags up the UK, taking in 38 regional teams.
London’s Monopoly-themed walk/scoot/ride (yes, we ARE using London public transport for a few bits – we’re not quite silly enough to do it ALL by foot!) is the brainchild of Vanessa (HPMCQ), Sophie (Franglaise Mummy) and Sarah (Grenglish). On the way from St Pancras to Waterloo, and then on to Fleet (where the baton will be passed over to Tanya), we’ll be handing out flyers cooked up by Print-Print, and zippy MicroScooters will be helping some of us keep up the pace.
The Pigeons and I are joining in, from Euston Station to Vine Street, taking in Kings Cross, Liverpool Street, and Whitechapel. We’ll be doing our best to keep up with this gang of London-based bloggers:
not another mummy blog, chocolate is not the only fruit, manaias mama, the holiday tots, red ted art, loved by parents, jenography, was this in the plan, i carried a watermelon, mums do travel, mummy and boo, a baby on board, domestic goddesque, babes about town, hatty daze, kids chaos, jacintaz3, nelc3, se magazines, clarina’s contemplations , family four fun, rock ‘n’ roller baby
And now comes the ask: pleeease sponsor us for our two hours on the road! Every tiny bit helps. It’s easy: you can either text HONK to 70005 and donate £5, or visit the London Team Honk’s giving page.
If our antics have inspired you to do something yourself, the first ever Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games take place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd March 2014. The public can join the fun and games by running, swimming or cycling their way to raising cash at over a thousand venues around the country, including the landmark events at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
